ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students)
The ELICOS Centre offers a variety of interesting English language courses for students wanting to improve their English for international communication for personal development, business and professional purposes or for further study. All ELICOS courses are offered full-time.
ELICOS students have access to the latest modern multi-media and computing facilities, an Independent Learning Centre (ILC) designed specifically for the needs of international students, audio and video equipment and modern, well-equipped classrooms.
Course information General English Courses are for 25 hours per week.
Elementary entry level 3.0 IELTS or equivalent. Pre-Intermediate entry level 3.5 IELTS or equivalent Intermediate entry level 4.0 IELTS or equivalent Upper Intermediate entry level 4.5 IELTS or equivalent Advanced entry level 5.0 IELTS or equivalent
All general English programs include the following
Reading Writing Grammar Speaking Pronunciation Listening Vocabulary development
The Upper Intermediate and Advanced ELICOS courses include preparation for the language and study skills required for IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL and Cambridge examinations. Students are given the opportunity to become familiar with the format of these tests.
In addition the Advanced ELICOS course includes intensive preparation for further study at a TAFE institute or university (English for Academic Purposes).
Course commences
The main intake dates are in January/February, April, July and October. There are also five-week intake dates throughout the year.
Assessment methods
There is ongoing formal and informal assessment including: Continuous assessment throughout each module Regular language skills tests Internal exams at the end of each term Individual and group assignments Classroom presentations Teaching methods Supervised classroom learning Customised course content to suit individual learning styles Communicative tasks including pair and group work with other overseas students Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Clear and concise grammatical explanation The integration of authentic materials as appropriate
Course outcome
On achievement of an Advanced ELICOS Certificate or IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, students can commence a formal program of mainstream study at Chisholm Institute. Students can enter an Australian university if the required entry-level IELTS score is achieved.
Entry requirements
ELICOS students are assessed on arrival and placed in an ELICOS class according to their demonstrated language skills.
