** REGULAR ESL PROGRAM ** The English as a Second Language program is comprised of an integrated core course and a number of electives. Students have the option of "creating" their own program by either staying focussed on academic English or choosing other electives in business writing, business communication, and general communication. Core courses are organized according to levels - 010 (basic), 020 (high basic), 030 (low intermediate), 040 (high intermediate), 045 (low advanced) and 050 (advanced). Students are placed into one of these levels by writing an in-house placement test. Within the core courses students study listening, speaking, reading and writing through a theme-based integrated curriculum. Students read, write, listen to, and speak about particular topics of interest. The core courses are offered three hours a day for a total of 12 hours a week in fall/winter and 15 hours a week in spring/summer. The electives are divided into different sections.
* Section A electives focus more on the specific language skills and are offered twice a week for a total of four hours. Electives offered within this category may include: > Academic Writing > Basic Grammar and Writing > Business and Technical Writing > Oral Communication
* The electives in Section B are offered through workshop formats for two hours a week in fall/winter/spring and summer. These electives respond to more specialized areas of language learning in which students are interested. Workshop topics may include: > Guest Lectures (including business related topics) > TOEFL Preparation > TOEIC preparation > Slangs and Idioms > Pronunciation > Canadian Cultural Studies > Drama > Public Speaking
* Electives in Section C are a series of informal learning workshops and socio cultural activities for a total of two hours a week in fall/winter and two hours a week in spring/summer. Activities may include: > Live Theatre > Debates > Specialty Sports > Exploring English through Movies > Arts and Crafts > English through Singing
N.B. Electives are based on students' needs and may vary from one semester to the next. All electives require specific levels of language proficiency. To complete a semester's program, students must choose one elective from each section.
* Evaluation To obtain a pass, students must gain an average grade of 60%. Evaluation is done on the basis of graded assignments, tests, mid-term and final examinations. At the end of the semester, students receive a report stating courses taken and grades received.
