12-Week Program Course Descriptions
ENGLISH 110/111* : Beginner Level English
Students in our 12-Week Program participate in a student-centred immersion program which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The courses include:
- Reading and Vocabulary
- Structure and Writing
- Listening and Pronunciation
- Spoken English
- Conversation
- Activities/Conversation Groups
In addition, students attend workshops and socio-cultural activities of their choice.
Reading and Structure
The primary emphasis in reading is on acquiring reading skills and increasing vocabulary. Readings include simple short stories and highly adapted and unadapted newspaper articles. Students respond to readings both orally and in writing. They are required to prepare informal presentations in the course.
Weekly writing assignments train students in paragraph and letter writing. Formal instruction at this level focuses on narrative and descriptive forms. In regular oral presentations and group work students demonstrate oral mastery of grammatical structures they have learned.

Language Laboratory
Students participate in a laboratory class with a focus on listening comprehension with some pronunciation instruction. Materials include radio programs, songs and adapted lectures.
3 hours per week
Spoken English
The focus of this class is on students' spoken English. Students learn vocabulary for particular contexts and situations and participate in various communicative activities including dialogues, role-plays, language games and group discussions.
3 hours per week
Conversation
The conversation facilitator works with students to help them become more fluent in their spoken English. Students participate in informal communicative activities and discussions led by a Queen's University student.
1.5 hours per week
Activities/Conversation Groups
In all sessions, the students participate in a variety of language-intensive socio-cultural activities. Students may choose to participate in small-group tutorials during the fall and winter.
Approximately 2 hours per week

ENGLISH 120/121* : Elementary Level English
Students in our 12-Week Program participate in a student-centred immersion program which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The course includes:
- Reading and Vocabulary
- Structure and Writing
- Listening and Pronunciation
- Spoken English
- Conversation
- Activities/Conversation Groups
In addition, students attend workshops and socio-cultural activities of their choice.
Reading and Structure
The primary emphasis in reading is on reading for different purposes, acquiring appropriate reading skills and increasing vocabulary. Readings include both minimally adapted materials such as short stories and poems and authentic readings such as newspaper articles. Students respond to readings both orally and in writing. They are required to prepare informal and formal presentations in the course.
Weekly writing assignments train students in paragraph, letter and essay writing. Formal classroom instruction at this level focuses on writing introductions, conclusions and supporting details in narrative, descriptive, expository and paragraphs/essays. In regular oral presentations and group work students demonstrate oral mastery of the grammatical structures they have learned.

Students participate in a laboratory class with a focus on listening comprehension with some pronunciation instruction. Materials include radio programs, songs and adapted lectures.

Spoken English
Students are introduced to the fundamentals of English pronunciation (stress, intonation, rhythm, vowel and consonant sounds) and to the elements of conversation. They practice spoken English in a variety of ways, including short dialogues, role-plays, games and formal/informal presentations.

Conversation
The conversation facilitator works with students to help them become more fluent in their spoken English. Students participate in formal and informal communicative activities and discussions led by a Queen's University student.

ENGLISH 130/131* : Intermediate Level English
Students in our 12-Week Program participate in a student-centred immersion program which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The courses include:

- Structure and Writing
- Listening and Pronunciation
- Spoken English
- Discussion
- Activities/Conversation Groups
In addition, students attend workshops and socio-cultural activities of their choice.

The primary emphasis in reading is on reading for different purposes, applying appropriate reading skills and increasing vocabulary and the speed and fluency with which students read. Readings include a variety of newspaper and magazine articles, contemporary short stories, essays and research materials. Students respond to readings both orally and in writing. They are required to prepare several informal and formal presentations in the course.
Weekly writing assignments train students in paragraph and essay writing. Formal classroom instruction at this level focuses on different rhetorical styles, process writing, problem and solution, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and the research paper. In regular oral presentations and group work, students also work to develop oral mastery of the various grammatical structures they have learned.

Students participate in a laboratory class with a focus on listening comprehension with some pronunciation instruction. Materials include radio programs, songs and adapted and unadapted lectures.

ENGLISH 140/141* : Advanced Level English
Students in our 12-Week Program participate in a student-centred immersion program which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The courses include:
- Reading and Vocabulary
- Structure and Writing
- Listening and Pronunciation
- Presentation Skills
- Discussion/Debate
- Activities/Conversation Groups
In addition, students attend workshops and socio-cultural activities of their choice.
Reading and Structure
The primary emphasis in reading is on reading for different purposes, developing critical reading skills and increasing vocabulary and the speed and fluency with which students read. Readings include a variety of contemporary texts, literature, essays and research materials. Students respond to readings both orally and in writing. They are required to prepare a number of informal and formal presentations in the course.
Weekly writing assignments train students in the subtleties and/or complexities of academic writing. Formal instruction in exposition at this level concentrates on exercises in logic, classification, organization, research and argumentation. In oral presentations and class activities students demonstrate oral mastery of the grammatical structures they have learned.

Students learn and practice the skills involved in speaking before an audience and in making effective presentations.

Discussion/Debate
Students participate in structured discussions and debates on contemporary topics of their choice facilitated by a Queen's University student.
1.5 hours per week

ESLA 150: Continuing Advanced
Students in our 12-Week Program participate in a student-centred immersion program which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The courses include:
- Reading, Vocabulary, and Structure
- Listening and Pronunciation
- Discussion/Debate
- Presentation Skills
- Activities/Conversation Groups
In addition, students attend workshops and socio-cultural activities of their choice.
Reading and Structure
The course focuses on analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing various reading and lecture materials. Instruction at this level helps students develop critical reading skills, increase vocabulary, and the speed and fluency with which students read. In addition, note-taking skills are emphasized. Readings include a variety of magazine and newspaper articles, academic journals and research materials. Students respond to readings both orally and in writing.
Weekly writing assignments train students in the subtleties and/or complexities of academic writing (essay and report writing). Formal instruction in exposition at this level concentrates on exercises in logic, classification, organization (unity and coherence) and argumentation.
Students are required to prepare a number of informal and formal presentations in the course. In regular oral presentations students demonstrate oral mastery of the grammatical structures they have learned.

Students participate in academic presentations and seminars in an authentic interactive context.

Students participate in structured debates on highly academic topics of their choice facilitated by a Queen's University student.
