ÇÁ·Î±×·¥
¡á Intensive English Language for Academic Studies

This intensive eight-week program is designed for students whose second language is English and who wish to acquire the academic English language skills required for college/university entry.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.
  • Applicants must provide a TOEFL score of 507/180, TWE 4; or IELTS 5.5.

Adult students with significant life and work experience may apply for credits through P.L.A.R. Students should first attend a free P.L.A.R. Orientation Workshop offered through Continuing Education.

¡á General Arts and Science - English Language Studies

This program is designed for students whose first language is not English.

Our four-level English Language Studies program focuses on the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills required for college/university studies.

Students start at a level determined by scores on an in-house or internationally recognized English language test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

There is an increased academic focus at levels 3 and 4.

Concurrent with English studies, students take post-secondary credit courses including Strategies for Student Success.

Length: 4-level certificate program
Location: Doon Campus
Start: September, January and May (Levels 1,2,3 & 4)
First-Year Capacity: 300

*Fees are higher for international students on a Student Visa.
*Activity, Alumni, athletic, graduation, insurance and locker fees, as well as program-related costs such as books and supplies are additional.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19-years of age or older
  • An assessment of English language proficiency through a variety of tests.
  • An assessment of program suitability through an interview with program personnel may be required.
  • Applicants to the program will be required to write the English Language Studies In-House Examination to determine placement in the correct level in the program.
  • Test scores from internationally recognized English language tests are accepted for placement in the correct level in the program e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, TWE, MELAB.

Adult students with significant life and work experience may apply for credits through P.L.A.R. Students should first attend a free P.L.A.R. Orientation Workshop offered through Continuing Education.

¡á Teaching English as a Second Language

This is a restricted program. The certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language is a post-degree designed for students who wish to teach English as a Second Language in Canada and/or overseas. The program consists of 9 courses.

Each course provides background on key theoretical issues and practice in application of these issues to language teaching. The program includes a supervised teaching practicum and is recognized by TESL Ontario.

  • Two semester Ontario College Graduate Certificate program
  • Location: Doon
  • Start: September
  • This Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language is a full-time, two semester program.
  • Academic study is divided into nine(9)courses, each providing background on key theoretical issues and practice in application of these issues to language teaching.
  • The Program includes a supervised teaching practicum.
  • An undergraduate university degree.
  • Applicants possessing degrees/diplomas from institutions where the language of instruction was not English will be required to provide test scores as evidence of their English language proficiency. Test scores, if required, would be a minimum of TOEFL 250 (computer score); TOEFL minimums Reading 24, Listening 24, Speaking 27, Writing 28; IELTS 75 with no score less than 7; or equivalent scores in other recognized standard tests of English.
  • Submit proof of admissions requirements, including transcripts.
  • Applicants meeting minimum admission requirements are invited to begin the selection process which requires them to:
    - Complete a diagnostic grammar assessment.
    - Complete a writing sample.
    - Attend a faculty meeting to discuss program suitability.
  • Final selection is made based on the outcome of the above.
