The purpose of this course is to introduce students who are already bilingual to aspects of the English language which Anglophone students must also learn at school, as well as offering an introduction to English-Canadian culture. An emphasis is placed upon idiomatic expressions and the written language.

When you attend The University of Manitoba's Intensive English Program, you'll come together with one of the most unique learning opportunities available at a Canadian university.

Using placement tests to help determine English proficiency, we endeavor to provide instruction at the appropriate level so that the student may derive the most academic benefit from all our IEP courses.

All our instructors have a minimum of one bachelor degree, several hold Master's degrees, and many have specialized degrees and/or experience in second language instruction. All our instructors are hired on the basis of their knowledge, energy and dedication to the program.

You'll attend to improve your English, of course. But that's just the start of your experience!

During the the spring or summer, you're also in for a geographic eye-opener!

You'll discover the cool, clear lakes of Manitoba, its colourful festivals and unique historical sites!

You'll travel through Saskatchewan. Through a sea of wheat, to the regal city of Regina!

From there you'll move on to discover Alberta. You'll see the majestic Rockies and the sensational, world-renowned holiday resorts of Banff, Jasper Park, and Lake Louise!

Throughout the program you will increase your knowledge of English beyond what textbooks can offer, because you will share your study experiences, university accommodation and travel with students from French-speaking Canada and students from around the world!

Not only will you improve your vocabulary, but you will have a better appreciation of our country.

THE AFTER-STUDY SIGHTS!

A variety of extra-curricular activities is offered each day. The University of Manitoba is equipped with a beautiful indoor swimming pool, jogging tracks, tennis courts, and gymnasiums. You'll have the opportunity to participate in theatrical presentations. There are frequent outings to Winnipeg's historical and cultural sights. As well, there will be several excursions to the beach and to Lower Fort Garry.

ACCOMMODATIONS

You can choose to live in a student residence or with a host family. In keeping with the immersion aspect of the program, students and staff are lodged in one of two student residences. By sharing study and living facilities, students and staff create an atmosphere in which the second language becomes an instrument of work and relaxation.

University residences consist of single rooms and a limited number of double rooms. Laundry rooms are provided for your convenience. As well, there are lounges, television rooms, and a lounge with piano. Sheets and pillow cases are provided, but not towels.

Because rooms in residence are available on a first-come-first-serve basis, please notify our office at the time of your registration if you would prefer residence or homestay accommodations.

Homestay places are available for those wishing to live with a host family providing students with an opportunity to practice their English skills while sharing in the day to day life of a Canadian family.

MAKING TRAVEL PLANS

If you plan to travel by rail or air, you are advised to make your reservations early. If you are unable to arrive on the first day of the program, please advise the Director of the program, as soon as your travel plans are confirmed.

We shall do our best to meet students at the airport, train station, and bus depot.
