What is the English Language Foundation Program?

The ELF is an intensive English language and academic preparation program offered at the University of Calgary. The program is offered from Monday to Friday for 13 weeks. There are 4 hours of formal instruction related to reading, writing, speaking and listening skills each day. May include up to three (3) hours per week of supplemental language activities that are designed to assist students with the communication, presentation and study skills necessary to succeed in a new educational system and environment.

What is special about the ELF Program?

Students are enrolled in an intensive, supportive program that is committed to helping the students succeed in their studies. The U of C recognizes that learning the English language alone is not enough. Understanding the Canadian educational system, gaining an understanding of the study, communication and presentation skills that are important to the success of students are all a focus of the program. The supplemental language activities, which are a required part of the program, provide the extra assistance and support necessary for students to succeed. Your success is our success!

Students enrolled in the ELF program are given a U of C identification card which entitles them to all the privileges and access to all the resources and facilities of any student at the U of C. Residence, the sports facilities, student groups and activities, the library, student services or any other assistance required is available to ELF program students.

Special attention will be given to helping students gain vocabulary and familiarity with their specific departments/faculties. Many of the supplemental language activities are planned to expose students to the specialized language of their field of study.

The University of Calgary has over 800 international students from more than 80 countries. The International Student Centre organizes activities, provides assistance and support and is a gathering place on campus. ELF students are a welcome addition to the international student community at the U of C.

On an ongoing basis, students will have access to the advice and assistance of the ELF Program Coordinator and the International Student Advisor from the International Student Centre, in addition to all other student support services.
