The Fiji National University was formed by merger of six state-funded tertiary institutions in Fiji: the Fiji Institute of Technology, Fiji School of Medicine, Fiji School of Nursing, Fiji College of Advanced Education, Lautoka Teachers College and Fiji College of Agriculture.
A year later, the Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji was also merged with the University and a new centre, the National Training and Productivity Centre, was formed. FNU is the largest University in the country with more than 1600 staff.
The University's campuses are located at various towns around the country and offer a wide range of programmes from certificate to postgraduate degrees. The College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is based on Koronivia Campus at the site of the old Fiji College of Agriculture. The College of Engineering, Science and Technology is based on Samabula Campus, formerly the main FIT campus. The College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is based on Hoodless House Campus in Suva and at other sites including Pasifika Campus opposite Colonial War Memorial Hospital. It includes what was formerly the Fiji School of Medicine and the Fiji School of Nursing.
The College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies has moved to the University's central campus at Nasinu. The head office of the College of Humanities and Education is located on Nasinu Campus in Nasinu and includes the Schools of Education which is based on the teacher training campus at Lautoka. The School of Social Science and School of Communication and Creative Arts are based on Raiwai Campus.
We are Fiji's newest university, its first national university – but we have a long history of relevant education reaching back into the origins of our component colleges: more than 125 years in the case of the School of Medicine. Other sections were established as the nation's needs and aspirations changed and the island country became independent from Britain in 1970.
What emerged in 2010 is a university of five colleges and a training centre based on seven former tertiary institutions that can serve students in 29 different locations throughout Fiji with a broad range of affordable education programmes.
Importantly, the National University retains an orientation towards technical and vocational training, with a focus on real qualifications for real jobs and real opportunities for entrepreneurship and self employment, while providing pathways to further professional studies and higher qualifications.
Students will be able to progress through accessible multiple entry and exit points from certificate and diploma to advanced diploma, degree and postgraduate levels as their careers. |
